A very surprising book coming from veteran author, Lisa Jewell. 

In the beginning, I felt very confused. (it’s nice knowing a lot of other reviewers were just as lost as me.) I didn’t understand the characters, their point of view and how everything was coming together. We were switching POVs with no background or information. Maybe Jewell was trying to throw the reader right into the action to excite us? It didn’t work. 

I will say I felt confused, borderline annoyed, but I didn’t want to stop reading. 

The last third of the book I started actually understanding what was going on, and could see the picture of the story that she was trying to tell. Unfortunately, it was a little too late at that point because as the reveal started happening, everything felt very predictable.

So the reader spends 2/3 of the story in La La Land trying to connect all of these weird side storylines and timelines, only to be let down by the last 1/3. 

Additionally, I don’t get the motivation of the main character Jane. Which one could say Jane was driving this whole story. And when you aren’t on the same page as your main character, it’s really hard to be fully invested. Why was she so insistent in looking into this family? It wasn’t that crazy suspicious.

A big letdown from an author I am a huge fan of. Catch you on your next one Jewell!
