The Bad Beginning By: Lemony Snicket

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I tried to summarize this book, but felt the it was best to let the most clever, most truthful, most important author I have ever come across give you, reader, the summery.

From the author:

Dear Reader,

I’m sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

With all due respect,

Lemony Snicket

When picking up this book, I knew it was for children. Quick research on my part showed that this series would hopefully compete against the currently very popular Harry Potter series.

As a “Potterhead” this book feels way different and not on the same level as Harry Potter. I actually was surprised these two stories were written at the same time. For me, the writing felt ‘old timey’. Which may be what the author was going for, if so, excellent work. To finish off comparing the two… while both are considered ‘kids’ books, Snicket’s book I felt could be read as an adult or child, while Harry Potter level of writing felt more child-level writing. (Maybe I should reread one more time to confirm this theory… but that’s where my memory is at right now)

High level, this book as great morals. Teaching children to look out for one another, especially one’s siblings. On the other hand, it also felt extra dark. For example, the way the fat man was looking at Violet… Maybe I read too many horror/thriller/mystery books and should get my mind out of the dark hole, but it gave me the creeps/the icks/the no thank yous.

Again, maybe that is okay. Guide kids to use their instincts to know when something is bad and to know to go to an adult for help is always the best option, even when you don’t feel like they could help or you are misunderstanding the situation.

Again, good morals Snicket!

Although a ‘kids’ book, I think adults could enjoy as well. I personally couldn’t get through the TV show, but if you are like me, the book feels a bit different and a lot better. (Duh, books > TV show) I’m excited to continue on this series.
