I thought this book was horrible. HORRIBLE. I mean it wasn’t bad .. but honestly it wasn’t good. I’m being overdramatic, I know. This is who the book did to me though. I think the worst part was the actual subject matter. It felt like smut. A different version of ’50 Shades of Grey”. I might be being overdramatic, but I just wasn’t impressed with it.
I think the most offensive part of it all is this is an amazing, extraordinary historical figure. Lee Miller has accomplished so much, lived so much life and there is so much to talk about, yet the author went in a different direction. There is a whole world the author could have grasped onto. Yet this amazing, complex woman was reduced to a hollowed out version of herself. Maybe this is who Lee really was, maybe it isn’t. (I understand this is a fictionalized version of Lee and by no means think otherwise.) We all want to put figures we look up to on to a pedestal and the woman portrayed in The Age of Light was not someone I liked. Someone I wouldn’t want to look up to or even grab a drink with at a bar. The way Lee was portrayed was just miserable. The nods to WWII was just for show. As if the author wanted to prove something … add some more drama… make it more ‘historical’. Yet again, the effort fell flat for me.
This was the author’s decision and her creative right to create such a book. When you do something so bold you are going to get a pretty clear split of people who love the idea and others who dislike it. I fall on the latter.
The writing wasn’t bad, necessarily. I just have a bad taste in my mouth after the whole experience and I couldn’t imagine picking up another book from this author.
The crazy part is, I’ve read worst books. Read books with horrible writing, bad plotting, etc. Yet this book gave me such a negative reaction that I had to finish it. I had to know how it ended. In the end, I would not recommend.
I am knowingly breaking my rule of one star means I didn’t finish the book. I DID finish the book but due to the gross feeling I am left with AFTER finishing the book.- it deserves nothing more than 1 star.
