No matter what your thoughts are with my rating, in the end this is such a sweet story. I personally had a hard time really diving in and letting this magical-realism world the author created take over.
It was a wonderful overall story, wonderful setting and I really loved all the baggage each character had. It was wonderful watching them come together and support one another, even while they all dialed with their own past. Isn’t that how the real world works? There is never a perfect character in the real world that can come save the character with the dramatic past… we all have something we are dragging around with us. That weight doesn’t mean we aren’t able to be the support for another. Really, really beautiful message.
My only real ‘schtick’ with this book was the chaos. I had a hard time falling in love with the story as a whole. I could feel myself as I was reading loving moments, but just as soon as I got a rhythm, I was pulled out. Whether its was the ‘ghost story’ chapters or the messy plot that didn’t seem to flow in a way that made sense to me – either way I’d chalk this up to a ‘good book, just not for me’.
