A wronged assassin is given a chance to free herself from a death camp, but she stumbles on way more than a simple competition.
My biggest question is where is the throne in Throne of Glass?
To give you a quick background of where I am at with this viral author, Sarah J. Maas. I have read the ACTAR series before picking up this series…. my first take away is wow this is VERY young adult. To be clear, I mention this in a positive way. It’s a nice break from all the SPICE from ACTAR. Throne of Glass is juvenile. There are no mind blowing twists. Situations are revealed in a very slow, well spelled out way. The characters are never smarter than the reader.
I struggled throughout the book of understanding the world I was sitting in. I like being able to see/imagine and the different scenery was so different that I couldn’t get a big picture of this world. A glass castle, an ancient looking tower… Maas should have stuck with a vibe and been consistent. The ‘glass’ wasn’t impactful enough to matter and only added confusion.
I also struggled thinking of ACTAR, where are the faeries? Are all the characters really human? Where are the tails? Wings? (Just kidding). A silly thing to mention, but when you spend so much time in ACTAR and come into this almost ‘normal’ human world – it might through you off balance.
Anyways – this wasn’t the mind bending story I felt it is sometimes portrayed as. How did this get so viral? But on the other hand, I also didn’t hate it. It was a nice break. A cute world. I plan to continue with the series.
My advice, read this series first (bold advice after only reading the 1st of this series CMAC) and then read ACTAR and enjoy observing the jump this author made in story telling and world building. Wonderful job Maas.
All of that being said, I enjoyed this read. It was easy. I felt relaxed throughout it. I cared about the characters… it was a well done, young adult, fantasy story. Don’t make it anything else it’s not.
