THE GOLDEN COMPASS BY PHILIP PULLMAN

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I picked up this book as a recommendation and dove in quickly as it’s already been made into a show on HBO. I admittedly didn’t know this book was written for children. As I struggled to get into the story, I found myself appreciating the imaginative world the author built.
I’m not against reading children’s books… but this was a bit rougher than expected. It was not only a child-level story, but the writing felt very ‘child-level’. The style of the writing was hard to read as an adult. I believe that is why I struggled to really get into the story and really dive into the world.

Maybe it’s an unfair comparison, but if I were to compare this to Harry Potter … or even Chronicles of Narnia … His Dark Materials cannot compete.
It wasn’t all bad though – hence the 3 star rating. In the end I wouldn’t ‘not’ recommend, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend and I personally will not be continuing on with the series.
