The Midnight Knock By: John Fram

, ,

The latest horror book I read. I don’t read a lot of horror, but when I do … I like to make sure it’s weird-horror.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

A locked-room/Groundhog Day mystery meets white-knuckle horror in this thriller, where strangers must survive a deadly night in a remote Texas motel.

The Midnight Knock is Groundhog Day meets horror-locked-room-mystery. I’m not sure yet if that’s a compliment or a diss.

I will say the way the book or storyline starts over I thought was artistically very clever.

It started off so strong and I zoomed through the plot. So much so that I felt as if I was getting to the end of the story and confused with how much book I had left to read.  (Hindsight, that is the point.)

Where it went wrong for me is it started to get a little too repetitive. Which duh, it’s a Groundhog Day style book. It’s going to be repetitive. But the balance of repetitive0-interesting and repetitive-boring was not there for me.

I also like my horror with a touch of realism. I don’t want to give away too much, but at a certain point, some things were revealed to the readers and at that point I was like, ew monsters.  It just got a little out of control for me where the realism part of the horror of being in this psychological-cycle you want to break out of turned into unrealistic horror and you are going to lose me as a reader every time.

The ending wasn’t as satisfying as I wish it was. I felt like I went through a lot as a reader to get to that point and I wanted more.

I’ll stand by my three stars for this book because it was something different. My advice to my reader friends is, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this but if you do pick it up and you start to get super annoyed, put the book down. It’s not worth finishing if you’re struggling to enjoy the first half.
