The Ghostwriter By: Julie Clark

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Ghostwriter Olivia Dumont has spent her life trying to distance herself from the fact that her father is the ‘alleged’ murderer of his two siblings. She’s hid from the world and her father for years.

Unfortunate circumstances brings her head to head with not only her father, but what really happened in 1975.

I just set the book down next to me on the couch. I’m basking in the warmth that spreads throughout your body when you finish a satisfying book.

I went to Goodreads to read some other reviews and quickly stopped myself. I didn’t want other people’s thoughts ruining the tingly feeling I have right now.

This was such a well done book. It’s the perfect display of a slow burn.

There were multiple POV‘s, but I never felt overwhelmed. The cast of characters was tight and well executed. Each character felt very unique. Additionally, I’d say there weren’t a lot of likable characters. And I loved that. Sometimes likable characters are a cop-out that authors can use to make you enjoy the book more. I’m starting to feel that authors that can write annoying or vile or psychologically complex characters and still leave the reader enjoying the pages are the “real ones”. (Not that you aren’t talented author if you are writing a likable character in a novel. Eye roll.)

I read a comment that maybe Vincent should’ve died immediately and the reader watches Olivia as she unravels the mystery while cleaning out Vincent’s house. Interesting, but I disagree. The puzzles, the hunt and the relationship of father and daughter I found absolutely fascinating and enjoyable. I also really enjoyed the way father and daughter relationship developed (no spoilers) but Clark chose an unpredictable path which kept me engaged.

There are many layers to discuss in this book, but I’ll let you discover them for yourself. What a lovely prose. Well done, Julie Clark. I can’t wait to read your next one.

If it is an obvious, I recommend this to all my reader friends.
