During an epic snowstorm, Derby innocently finds shelter in a rest stop. Due to the snow there’s no surprise. There are also other strangers waiting in the dim, dirty rest stop.
This loan would be a pretty torturous night. Until Darby accidentally sees a hand gripping a metal post inside a Creepy van. Did she imagine it? Or one of these strangers a kidnapper?
The premise of this book is pretty simple. The way Taylor Adams constructed this book is anything but simple.
I would’ve enjoyed this book, even without all the twists and turns Taylor Adams inserted into the story line. Just when you think you have it all figured out he throws another twist at you.
Some of the internal thoughts of Darby get a little overwhelming and annoying. You can feel the author building up the suspense. You feel yourself wanting to rip the Band-Aid off and get to it. Let the build happen because the ending is oh-so-worth-it.
I really enjoyed the POV of both main character, Darby, and our evil monster/villain. Adding the villain’s POV helped me understand what kind of psychopath he was. It made more sense reading Darby’s POV, when observing his actions and decisions. Absolutely wonderfully twisted.
There are a lot of comments, saying Darby is an idiot and the decisions she makes are idiotic. Part of me feels like some of these “idiotic” decisions happen in the snow. If you’ve ever been in freezing cold snow/blizzard conditions you’ll understand that you might be an idiot too. You’re a little clumsy. And for me any mistake she made while dealing with all of this were actually perfectly reasonable. I felt I really understood Darby’s thinking and decision-making in such a tense situation. I thought Taylor Adams did a good job of making realistic choices for a real person. You aren’t going to be a super hero … you are going to question yourself … going to try to recruit someone else to help …
The ending was absolutely gruesome. It was dark. It made my stomach twist. To be clear, these are all compliments.
Overall, I thought this was a really good, gruesome, dark, quick, horror read. I would recommend this to all my reader friends.
