What would it be like to live your life by the tide? To live on an island that only allows escape when the water allows. What happens when you’re stuck on the island?
The Blue Hour is a story about an artist who dies and a friend who tries to protect her legacy. Flash forward to present day as we discover the web of lies left behind.
It was hard to summarize this book because I’m still spinning on what the actual plot is. There isn’t one single focus. There isn’t one mystery we are trying to solve. All of this gives the reader a bit of uneasiness.
At the beginning, I felt very intrigued with how Paula set up the story. It was excellent writing, excellent character building and fun snippets of diary entries to keep the reader engaged.
While I was reading, I kept waiting for the shoe to drop. I was waiting for the climax of the story to lead me into the big reveal. Yet I’m not sure it ever really came?
Sure – some things were revealed, but I’m still left with a lot of questions that weren’t answered. Questions that became a big focal point in the book, or so it seemed.
Most importantly what every thriller reader wants is that twisty reveal. A twist that is exciting, unexpected, and realistic. Even the most obvious twist if set up properly can still be exciting. This was all lacking in the last 1/3 of the book.
It’s not all negative and criticism. The Blue Harbor was just weird. Odd enough that I was at least highly entertained. Although it didn’t have the Paula Hawkins magic that I was expecting. My conclusion, I would not recommend this to my fellow friends.
