Being Henry: The Fonz . . . and Beyond By: Henry Winkler

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Henry Winkler, or better known as “the Fonz” from the TV show Happy Days, wrote a memoir.

Horrible intro, I know. What can I say though? It’s a memoir.

I wasn’t a HUGE Happy Day fan, but I did watch it and I knew (and mimicked) the beloved character of ‘The Fonz’ most of my life.

I will say, I never really paid attention to him since. Yes, I guess now that he mentioned it, he was also in that Adam Sandler movie… but he wasn’t really on my radar.

I didn’t know a lot of the ‘big names’ Henry mentioned or their reputation … I wonder if you did, if you would think it was juicy gossip (which I feel is the only reason some people read memoirs). He did mention he was conflicted if he should say how he felt as the people he was referring to were dead and couldn’t defend themselves. I’m personally glad he did, he was truthful and I appreciate it.

As with most memoirs, I recommend listening to an audiobook if the author is the narrator. You get so much more out of it. For example, Henry had his wife speak her ‘parts’. It was wonderfully done.

Maybe I’m making this a habit, but I rate most memoirs 5 stars because who am I to judge? (Yes, conflicting being a ‘review’ which is essentially judging) I find it too odd to judge someone’s life, from their perspective. If I feel they are being honest, wrote something in hopes to share (rather than a money grab) … wonderful.

So for me, thank you Henry for giving people a glimpse into your life. Fonz-only fans or huge Winkler fans will find both this book, especially the audiobook, funny and endearing.
