The Haunting of Hill House By: Shirley Jackson

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A doctor invites strangers to a known haunted house in hopes to experience something odd…

The guests are invited to enjoy but most importantly, take notes.

According to the internet – The Haunting of Hill House is a classic book, written in 1959, that was essential to defining the horror genre.

The fact that this was written in 1959 feels very telling. This book is of that era. It’s not defining time as some of the other classics do. It’s a snap shot of the era of hippies, overly academic and soap opera style relationships.

It’s oddly written, slow and has a few scary moments that while I was reading this in the dark before bed made me second glance at a shadowy corner of my bedroom.

I went in with low expectations, which is maybe why my 3 star + 1 star for being a classically significant book, came from. Another friend gave it two stars as she went in with way higher expectations.

I also read this WHILE watching the Netflix series. I found it enjoyable anytime the series mentioned a quote from the book as I was so close to it.

It’s a short book. Won’t waste much of your time. So in my opinion, read it. Why not?
