A story about marriage, relationships, hopes and life in the 90s Chicago area.

This book exhausted me.

There were two books inside this one novel and maybe I didn’t give it a real chance once the second book started … but at 75% I realized I was dredging picking this monster of a book up.

The first book included so much lecturing. Talking at the reader instead of talking to the reader. Telling the reader, instead of showing the reader. Quite honestly, it got on my nerves. Not only did I feel lectured but I was bored. Paragraphs never seemed to end. If I saw dialogue coming up, I jumped to it. Hoping to get a little bit of entertainment after being drowned in pretentious life advice previously.

Other reviewers mentioned what a joy the second book was and how it made the dredge through the first book worth it… So take that for what it is. For me, it was too late.

I could probably go on with more specifics, but I don’t want to live in the negative. I did need to vent, so thanks you for giving me a bit of grace. This is a DNF for me. Life is too short, TBR lists too high, to force yourself to read a book you don’t enjoy.

There were moments of ‘laughing out loud’ or thought provoking thoughts that made me think a little deeper. In the end, they were too far, too few. I would not recommend to my friends (maybe my enemies).
