The Violence By: Delilah Dawson

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Following three abused women in unprecedented times as they attempt to escape their abusers and survive.

Let’s start off with, I was not expecting that.

I again, didn’t read anything about this book in advance before picking it up and was pleasantly surprised.

The author’s note in the beginning felt odd. I can see it being a trigger warning but simply saying, this is a dark, graphic novel might have been good enough.

An interesting twist on the latest pandemic we all went through. Felt like COVID meets The Purge? A unique concept and hats off to the author for having such an idea. Was this unique idea executed perfectly? Well…

I agree with the majority of the other reviewers… I’m tired of hearing about COVID. As readers, we know, we get it. We could have read this book and connected where the author got the idea without having to read that word over and over again. (I don’t even want to write it here.)

I mentioned the ‘trigger warning’ author note at the beginning. The author attempted to be dark, but maybe pulled back and added warning? I don’t know. Don’t apologize for writing horror. Don’t apologize for writing a dark novel. Do it and do it well. For me, this book wasn’t dark enough, wasn’t graphic enough for such a graphic, horrible, disease that was described in the book. It was more about the three generations of women living in this diseased world. Maybe that was the point? Maybe I don’t get the point.

The characters annoyed me. Again, not consistent on their ‘true’ character that was presented. The author changed their behavior too radically. This doesn’t allow the reader to attach and care.

As I said, a unique story that is slightly repetitive and slightly messy. I didn’t hate it. I loved what the author tried to do, even if they didn’t execute perfectly.

** ha! Here I was thinking I wouldn’t have a lot to say about this book.
