The Mystery Guest By: Nita Prose

I’m sure we can all agree that when we read The Maid no one was expecting a second. Yet, Molly returns to save the day once again at another unfortunate event at the hotel. We dive back to her past and get a glimpse at what made Molly, the Molly we know and love.

And I did love Molly, but you can’t be surprised again. You can’t get to know a character again. That might be my ‘issue’ with the story is what made the first book special is Molly’s character was so unexpected.

So in that sense, the specialness of learning, discovering Molly was gone. For me the book fell flat in that sense. I also really loved. her love interest. We only got a glimpse of it at the very end of the first book, so I was disappointed her beau was not included in this story. Maybe the author did it on purpose because it let Molly be “Molly” without a knight in shining armor coming to save her. Maybe she wouldn’t have been able to help out the detective if her partner was there. She would have been more protected and unable to make classic “Molly” mistakes.

The mystery itself also fell flat for me. Not that interesting, super obvious (which to be fair ti was in the first book as well).

The specialness of this book was learning about the mansion, Molly’s upbringing and especially her grandma’s story. All book readers can’t help but love a book about books. About a library. About an author. So hook line and sinker there.

Yet, the repetitiveness. The … lack of intellect(?) the author afforded the reader left me feeling empty more than warmed while reading. I do not need a third installment of this story and if there is one, I most likely wouldn’t read it.
