I am a big fan of historical fiction, so I really enjoyed this story. I’ve read a few (A LOT) of WWII stories, but I have never read one set in Venice. That was SO interesting to me. Also interesting how the author mentions more than once that WWII hit other parts of Europe harder than Venice, but it doesn’t mean that Venice didn’t go through it’s own turmoil. Author probably said that more than needed, but either way, so interesting.
I fell in love with the main character, ‘Stella’. How she dealt with living a double life. How she felt torn about the relationships she had. As a reader, it’s easy to fall in love with a [secret] writer for an underground newspaper.
I reduce it a star due to the ending. Other reviewers picked up on the same ‘issue’. The ending was .. forced? The rest of the book was so well done, to try to force a happy ending was unnecessary. I could see many options the author could have taken to end the book – yet …
I don’t want to give anything away, but let’s just say … she makes some ‘surprise‘ name changes to get everything to match up. Disappointing.
Still a wonderful book about WWII in a location you don’t get to read boat often. Well done!
