Loved it!
I loved the characters and the way Penner weaved present time and the past together. I really loved how everything was tied up in a neat little bow at the end.
I am knowingly giving this story 5 stars although I don’t think it will ‘last’ with me. I don’t think this is the book I go running to retrieve from my shelf when someone asks what they should read next.
It felt like a short story stretched to cover a novel – yet I didn’t feel like I was painfully reading. I want to be harsh to this story. There wasn’t much mystery, wasn’t much of a climax or excitement and I agree with other reviewers that the present day storyline was kind of useless.
BUT!
It was a lovely book. It was told cleverly. Two timelines, 3 characters. Always weaving, always revealing a little bit more in each chapter. The ending was cleverly done to tie everything together and give us a feel good moment for this book filled with death, poison and failing marriages.
So although this isn’t a book that knocked my socks off – it is a book I thoroughly enjoyed while reading and finished quickly. It earned every single one of my five stars.
