What can you even say about such an iconic book, that hasn’t already been said?
The answer? Nothing.
So I won’t sit here and try to give a beautiful review on the writing, the songs, the poems or the story. That would waste everyone’s time.
What I will do is mention a few things I found interesting. I had no idea ‘not all those who wander are lost’ start right here in this story. You see this common phrase on the back of jeeps with a pair of flip-flops … yet, it originated from LOTR.
The fact that such iconic bands were inspired by Tolkien’s writing (Led Zeppelin, etc). The game Dungeons and Dragons started here (I’ll admit I never played… but I see the similarities).
The fact that this was written by hand, with pencil. The second draft written OVER the first in pen. The idea that this is a really a single book, while commonly referred to as a trilogy. The history of all the rewrites, republishing and the errors cropping up with every print.
Anyways – wonderful ‘first part of a single book’ that I can’t believe it took me so long to pick up. As someone who has watched the movie multiple times I am disappointed in myself. So if you too would like to avoid the disappointment, please, take the time to read this book. It won’t be a waste of time.
