What to say about ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors”…. Honestly I went into it not liking it. I didn’t like the synopsis. So my first advice to you is not read it. It felt very “And Then There Were None” and I was getting tired of reading books like that. On top of it, it sounded like it was a Christie twist with only 2 people. That didn’t make sense. For some reason, the clever [odd] title caused me to pick it up still.
I’m super glad I did. This was quite a layered story. Complicated (in a good way) and confusing (in a good way). Not too many characters to track and they all had personalities I could get to know. I loved the setting of the story too. Which is interesting as it is an odd building, yet I felt I could totally picture every room of the chapel and the view from the hilltop. The author did an excellent job of getting the scenery well explained, without OVER-explaining. Which is a challenged. Overall, this is a unique story.
There are some quirks though… The writing is sometimes leaning on a weird, ditzy cliche.(Maybe I’m only discussing one character here .. but …) It’s already a stretch on this disorder of someone not being able to recognize faces. Although, I was VERY intrigued to learn that’s a real thing and it sent me on a google deep dive. The whole premise of winning the trip on a whim? Just … not believable. Without giving anything away, maybe that was the point? Anyways – it bothered me none the less.
I rolled by eyes at the first anniversary letter … it wasn’t a believable ‘letter’ with all the added dialogue. Then I started loving them. I craved them. And I loved the little picture on top of each letter that changed with each anniversary(stupid, but I did).
I’m struggling [currently] on whether to go 4 stars or 5 stars. Something is holding me back from the full 5 stars. So I’ll go 4.5, rounded down to 4. Fair?
