NONE OF THIS IS TRUE BY LISA JEWELL

,

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I flipped and flopped on this rating and maybe after sitting with the book a bit longer I would reduce it a half or full star .. but right now … This is a 5 STAR LISA JEWELL book. And, she’s back!
Jewel, although one of my favorite authors, has been trending on 4 stars for me lately. Yet this one hit me hard in the face. It was not anything I was expecting at all.

The storyline and story telling was done masterfully. Weaving between multiple POVs and Netflix documentary snippets and doing so in a way that didn’t feel overwhelming. It was a slow burn. It pulled you in. You hated the characters (at least I did) yet you couldn’t help rooting for them. They made some stupid, unpredictable decisions in the story but instead of making me mad, it kept me on the edge of my seat.
The title itself feels like a talking point. As it feels like it gives away the mystery (or does it… ?).  You didn’t know who to trust, but you didn’t feel as if the character themselves were deceiving you.
My hesitancy with a full 5 star rating is the ending. The last 15%did feel like a ‘give up moment’, but also felt fine? Once you rip that bandaid, I just wish you would rip it all the way off. Like the scene with Katelyn (at the end), unnecessary. (All I’m going to say to avoid spoilers.) Felt like it dragged? Yet at the same time (this is the part of my brain that cannot not give it 5 stars) there were sprinklings of ‘truths’ and ‘not truths’ that made you question everything else in a mind-numbing-confusing-way-that-didnt-actually-wrap-up-the-book. Jewel did a good job of having the readers question the characters, kind of like when you watch a true crime documentary from only one point of view, you can’t help but wonder…

Overall – I loved every minute of this book. It does have some hard hitting subjects that Jewell isn’t here to mess around with. Which, I liked. Sorry. I think she did an excellent job, with a purposeful disturbing, thriller.
