MALIBU RISING BY TAYLOR JENKINS REID

,

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This was a complicated story – and I loved it. That is my biggest takeaway… was ‘wow’ that was overly complicated, there were many characters and I had no idea where the story was going. It was unnecessary. I was confused, I was distracted and I never really knew who I cared about (character wise). All of these points could be listed as ‘negatives’ but for me everything worked. All the chaos came together in a beautiful way. Which is the magic an author like TJR can do. It’s why we reach for her books before others.

I really loved the way it was organized, going hour by hour while snapping back to the past to help build us up to appreciate the present. I loved the poetry of  it all. The way we knew the ending would end with a fire.
I think I really, really appreciated that every character was damagedin their own way. No matter who you are, you could find common ground with someone. Whether you had it all, but started to get wrinkles or you are too pretty or your parents killed themselves with their toxic relationship… you could see yourself in someone.
This isn’t a book I would pick up again and again, but I’m leaving this story buzzing from entertainment. And for that, TJR deserves a full 5 stars.
