OH this one was interesting. This is my first Krueger book.
Funny how life can time things perfectly. I just happen to attend a Smithsonian presentation of the Indian code talkers which briefed viewers in the beginning of boarding schools, etc while reading this book.
Anyways – the book was good. A good mystery. A good flawed character that made the story feel more real. Loved that I didn’t guess the ‘who-dun-it’ right in the beginning. A solid story.
As someone who hasn’t read any Krueger or Cork mysteries previously – the epilogue could have been removed entirely or should have been lengthened. I don’t understand why it was even added. OR! We should have looped back to it at the end. Either way, I totally forgot about it until I started researching again for this review now.
The constant harping on the ‘whiteness’ thing was overdone. I assume it’s what’s happening in today’s world and influenced the writer while creating this story. There was a slight cowboy vs Indian cliche or white sheriff vs Indian cliche (reminded me of Longmire) going on, but the author took it a bit further when he made Cork feel bad for his ‘European’ heritage. I get that an element of the story is Liam cannot do his job because people on the Rez don’t trust him …. but a better ending to the book would be to celebrate Cork’s Indian heritage/blood and not degrade his European. This subject was just not integrated well – that’s really my point.
The story doesn’t make me want to read more of Krueger’s books or more of Cork’s story. It will not ‘last’ with me. But … it was a nice read and I don’t regret reading it.
Overall, interesting story. I would recommend this book.
