I so loved this …
First off, the good: This felt unique. It created a wonderful world for me. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, I loved watching their powers build and I really enjoyed the overall plot to the book.
The bad … I agree with other reviewers that the jumping around is exhausting. There is nothing that tells you that you are going back in time or into Elaine’s visions, the author just suddenly plunges you in. All of the jumping is not done well, at all. I also felt with 440ish pages of build up to the end, the end could have been expanded a bit more. I was so patient for the ending, what would it be? What future would come to exist? Then as I watched how little pages were left and kept reading, I couldnt help but say to myself, ‘that’s it?’
My theory is, if you love the Arthurian tales, you will not like this book. As someone who knows nothing about it other than Author pulls a sword from a rock and there is this wizard called Merlin that Mickey Mouse dressed up as – you’ll love it. I had no idea who Elaine was and enjoyed getting to know her in the book, or at least this version of her.
With all the ‘bad’ comments, I still give this book a 5 stars. This was so interesting to me. It’s a book that I will think about after putting it down and picking up a new one.
I would recommend whether you like or don’t like the Arthurian tales, to still give it a try.
