This is my second attempt at a Slaughter novel. The first attempt was False Witness, her newer novel and I absolutely hated it. I didn’t understand how she could get such a following when I not only hated what she was writing about but also how she was writing about it. Her writing style bothers me, sorry (not sorry). It’s just not for me.
I was told by some die hard fans, that are my friends, I really should give their favorite novel of hers a try. They admitted that False Witness wasn’t one of her best and I shouldn’t judge her on it. So I said, ‘FINE!’ and put on hold Pretty Girls at my local library.
To keep is simple here, the writing style still really bothered me. I can’t put a finger on what is ‘wrong’ that causes me such a headache while reading. Is it the short, clipped sentences? I want to say that’s the ‘issue’ here, but I love straight to the point authors. I hate the fluff that some authors try to add to their books.
I love violent, exciting thrillers that I could never handle in movie form … so you would think Slaughter would fit the bill.
In the end, Pretty Girls was a good, gross, neck tingling thriller. I just wish someone else wrote it. I do plan on torturing myself through the sequel, because why not? This is a 3.5 stars rounded to 4 stars.
