56 DAYS BY CATHERINE RYAN HOWARD

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I read this entire book on my day off – not because it was ‘that’ good, but because I wanted to. Take what you want from that sentence and let’s continue on with the review.
This book was easy reading. It switched back and forth from past (56 days ago.. but sometimes.. 67 days ago!) to present. It left you hanging on to the last word when it switched, requiring you to want to keep reading and reading. Cleverly done.

It felt as if there were multiple situations we had to figure out. The secrets of our narrators. The secrets from the past. The murder we were solving in the ‘now’. A lot going on but the author did a good job organizing it so the reader wouldn’t feel overwhelmed.

It was overall all a good book, a well plotted thriller. Let’s start with, I dont want to read about the pandemic. I lived it and it hasn’t been long enough for me to want to read about it. I know a lot of authors had a lot of time on their hands during lockdowns and were inspired by, guess what, being locked down. So I know I’ll be filtering and avoiding these style of books for awhile now. I will admit, I didn’t know that a book about lockdown is what I was picking up. That disappointment is on me.
My main ‘issue’ with the book is the switching POV in the past between the two MC. I didn’t think the author did that seamlessly. Switching from Oliver to Ciara could have been better and I sometimes felt confused. I also really hated the repeating of words. I’m sure the author tried to not put too much repeating in there, but it was word for word. Copy and paste style repeating which is almost as bad as when readers have to read the same thing in a different way.

I will admit, I feel I am being generous with this rating, but truth is, I finished the book in a day. It kept me engaged for that entire day. I didn’t get distracted and do something else, so that has to say something.
