WE WERE NEVER HERE BY ANDREA BARTZ

Rating: 3 out of 5.

As a Milwaukee native, this book hit harder than most. I think it was my favorite thing about the book… the setting. Whenever the author mentioned locations, I went ‘I know that!’. Yet, it was sad that she didn’t describe it enough. Someone living elsewhere isn’t going to know what the Fifth Ward is or Bayview or assume Bayview is close the airport or  know the streets of Brady. I also wasn’t a fan of her taking Nomad’s ‘The Fix’ and inserting it into the story (for no real reason), but not using the real name of the item or the bar that invented it. She used a few too many cliches of Milwaukee/midwest life for my liking, but overall… still giggled.
Now, the story isn’t really about Milwaukee, so I probably shouldn’t have started my review with that, but hey, I’m biased.

The story is about two girls, killing, but not really killing and dealing with this messed up, controlling, but not really controlling friendship. The plot is unbelievable. Emily remembering the past was as painful for her, as it was for the reader. I wanted to scream, ‘shut up’.
It was a rough read. Didn’t really hit as well as it maybe should have? The plot was all over the place, along with the girls’ thinking. The ending was a cute little nod to how disjointed and unbelievable the entire story was altogether. The writing just wasn’t fine tuned enough to have even the iffy plot line make me want to reach for this book.
A few mini complaints… If you haven’t traveled at all, why travel to remote/not really traveled locations first? If so, you should know basic travel safety rules like… don’t leave your bag hanging BEHIND you on your chair for someone to pickpocket? Dumb part of the story and dumb move by the character. Also, where is Kristen getting all this money for plane tickets here and there? And finally, is the moral of the story that we should feel bad for Kristen’s outbursts because her best friend killed herself at 12 years old? That all Kristen’s odd behaviors were only from that and we should be understanding?

Anyways – not the best, nothing I’d recommend unless you want to dive into some Milwaukee references and giggle along with me.
