A reluctant 3 stars.
This one was a hard one for me to review.
The writing really bothered me for some reason. The writing felt very fluffed. There was a lot of internal thinking that didn’t add anything to the story. The sentences didn’t seem to flow well. I just felt that while I was reading my brain was glossing over some words and (maybe unfairly) I blame that on the writing rather than my brain.
I hated jumping into Jake’s head. I struggled with the author telling me this boy is smart, but his spoke like a child younger than what I expected. I didn’t feel like I was jumping into a child’s POV, I was jumping into an adult pretending to be a child’s POV.
The plot on the other hand – was EXCELLENT. The little poem – hair standing up level creepy. The whole way the story weeved and woved through to get to the ending, excellent.
I have some annoyances with the ending, but I don’t want to give away any spoilers…
I’m sure you can guess what I’m talking about when you get there.
As I’m writing this review I’m still having a hard time placing how many stars I want to give it. On one hand, the writing was hard to get through and it annoys me that I paid for a book that I didn’t read every single word written. On the other hand, I loved the plot and the actual story.
I’m leaning 3.75 stars.
I will post 3 stars though. Just know it’s a reluctant 3 stars.
