I have mixed feelings about this one so deciding a rating was difficult. In the end, I went with my gut. This story starts out strong. A strong list of characters, two detectives that everyone will enjoy reading about and a twisting story right out of the gate.
I love reading about Wales – so already Mackintosh pulled me in with the setting of the story. It was giving me ‘Wallander’ vibes – if you know, you know.
I was really into it at first and super excited at the length of the book because I thought ‘wow, I’m going to get THIS much drama!?’ Things slowed down half way through and then it felt like the story halted.
I really don’t enjoy receptive story lines told again and again but from a different POV. That POV has to be mind bending different for me to want to read something I already read. There were scenes that were replayed that yes, proved a point/revealed some points to the reader…. but otherwise, I could do without 3/4 of the scenes that were repeated.
The scenery, the language and the wide array of unique characters stole the show for me though. I never felt obsessed or glued to the story, but I did get that little happiness flutter every time I reached for the book.
If you love Wales, you’ll love this.
