THE GIRLS IN THE STILT HOUSE BY KELLY MUSTIAN

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This fell into my ‘must read’ books and so I scooped it up without really thinking. I’ve noticed it compared to Where the Crawdads Sing quite often and the only thing this has in common is it’s in the southern swamps. Otherwise, I’d say I’m quite offended others are comparing the two. I would place this in the ‘don’t bother’ category for me.
This book was way overhyped for me. The characters were uninteresting and not engaging. The storyline was super choppy. The interactions between the two main characters felt forced, so the author could make a story line between black and white people. I wish the author would have focused on one character or the other. That could possibly help make this a more successful book in my eyes.

I’ve read people say, it revolves around friendship… I disagree. It doesn’t. It revolves around desperation. Desperation for both girls in different ways due to their different situation.

This book isn’t ‘all bad’ though. I agree with others that the setting is beautifuly described. The writing itself, was good. The way the author captured a snapshot of this time period was extremely well done.

Overall, not bad, but I wouldn’t recommend this to my fellow readers.
