MEXICAN GOTHIC BY: SILVIA MORENO-GARCIA

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I 100% read this book because goodreads and other reviewers told me to …
… and I shouldn’t have. I mean I should have because I believe you can’t have an opinion on something unless you read them (which is why I read a lot of bad books…).

I’m not saying this book was bad, but it was 100% unnecessary. There are so many pieces going on here and it’s not really saying much in the end.

We have this ‘gothic’ theme, we have the ‘twist’, we have some fake horror, we have an unlikeable main character, and on top of it we have some awkward romance as a cherry on top.

The ‘twist’ is so not worth it – but I won’t give it away because I’ll let you decide that if you want to read it.

I like a wide variety of genres, horror/thriller being one of them. I will say as a horror book, the author did well. She did well describing the scenes in a way that it played out perfectly in your head. As I think back to reading this book, I actually find myself thinking, did I watch the movie? The author did that good of a job.
Also the … explicit scenes … ugh, my skin STILL crawls thinking back to it. Gross, too real (and good job to you Silvia ha).

My issue isn’t with the writing …

My issue is with the whole point of the book. It’s like she tried to over do it, instead of taking the few good pieces she had and creating something magical.

Anyways, I’ll leave it up to you. There seems to be a clear divide. Either you hate it or love it, there is no grey area with this book.
