Let me start out by being honest here, I picked this book up only because it went ‘viral’, otherwise this book wouldn’t be something that would catch my eye. This is my first Hoover book and I’m still on the fence if it will be my last.
In the beginning of the book, I struggled to like it – like most reviewers. I know these steamy romantics went world wide with 50 Shades of Grey and while reading I thought, reboot? It was so cliche, it was cringy. So cringy in fact, I thought… Twilight? I kept reading though.
I think I only kept reading because I enjoyed making fun of all the cliches, I’m too hot for you, kinda feelings. An example that annoyed me was, for a guy that was so adamant that he didn’t want a relationship, just SEEING this girl made he want one now? He was pushing for a relationship. I can hear all the guys at the bar saying how they are ‘so hot’ and ‘only do one night stands’, can you HEAR my eyes roll? Well, now that I say that maybe Hoover hit the nail on the head.
So I ‘hate-read’ the whole way and then I hit the author’s note. It was entertaining how the author’s note is what changed my mind about the whole book. It made me rethink what I was reading this whole time. Gave me a completely different perspective about the whole story. Normally we are used to love conquering all but Hoover twisted it. She made us readers think this was real, true love but pulled the rug out from under us when after the abuse she walked away. It was an actual perfect ending as I really do think we need to learn to recognize these bad situations and walk away from them rather than fighting to keep something broken going.
So you’ll either love this book if you love those cliche romantics (nothing wrong with that) and you might love this book if you get to the end. I do understand those who put it down because the first 3/4 of the book is ROUGH. As I don’t believe books should only be good because of a dramatic twists or a wonderful ending, I had to land at 3 stars for my rating.
P.S. I should look into these ‘viral tiktoks’ that really put Hoover next level. Are they worth it?
