THIS IS NUTS.
First of all I agree with many reviewers who say, sometimes reality is worse than fiction. So incredibly true. You hear about torture or watch it in movies but it hits differently when it is true.
This isn’t the most beautifully written book. I respect that the author wanted to make it story-like but also only use dialogue actually collected from research, rather than made up. Olsen did a good job collecting the information to present it to us. It’s not an easy task.
This reads like a classic, true crime movie/series you would find on Hulu. It felt choppy in the way that in a visual presentation, we would break for interviews. It felt like Olsen was doing that in the book.. which does give a choppy feel.
All of that said, I wouldn’t rate it lower necessarily because of that. Yet, I can’t give it 5 stars because of the presentation either.
Anyways – wonderful job to Olsen for telling a truly horrible story. Really opens yours eyes to what true evil is out there, probably under our noses. Living next door to us. How so many kids might be going through something similar and are too afraid to speak up .. or might not even know that anything is wrong. This book might make you hold your family a bit tighter and be thankful for what you have.
