GOLDEN GIRL BY ELIN HILDERBRAND

,

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I always go into a Hilderbrand book with anopen mind but realistic that I might not enjoy it. It’s a 50/50 chance for me. I started out with a big eye roll when I realized we were going into the … ‘super natural’. My overall feeling is this book is boring and drawn out to give it its length.
Now boring isn’t always bad… boring can be as relaxing as sitting on a beach. You don’t need a lot to happen and you enjoy the slow pace. So I wasn’t looking for a thrill… but…

It was overall rough. In the middle of the book, I started changing my tune. I felt the Vivi storyline angle was interesting, a great perspective we don’t normally get from characters that are killed off so early in a story. Then the little things that were bothering me starting to add up. The big secret isn’t even that big of a deal (to me). The ending twist is also totally unrelated and added for shock value that felt like a copout. Scenes were left ‘unfinished’, if that makes sense. For example when Willa and Carson were talking (trying to avoid spoilers), we zoomed out to Vivi, then we zoomed into a Vivi storyline…. leaving readers unsure where the sisters landed. Also – wouldn’t Vivi, as their mother, be interested in continuing to watch the scene? This is just one of the small moments that stuck out to me of situations in the book where I would ‘get annoyed’ while reading.
It’s not all bad though. I did enjoy myself and glad I picked up another EH book. It was an interesting storyline and like all of EH books, we are set in a beautiful environment that you enjoy picturing yourself wandering around the beach town. Solid 3.5 stars for me.
