I was initially surprised the amount of five star reviews when I was scrolling through … but then I think, this is a really well structured book. It’s well written (despite my comments I plan to add later in this review) and it’s a wonderful debut from Willingham. I wish her nothing but the best.
Now, why I rated what I rated.
The writing caused me to drop from 5 to 4 stars. The writing isn’t bad, but there is so much filler that I was immediately exhausted. There are so many words that aren’t necessary. Do you know what I mean? I love books where every sentence matters and this one doesn’t have it. A good example is when she writes out a basic, boring announcement on TV. Yes, it’s a piddly example, but honestly, I look at the paragraph and go blah, blah, blah nothing interesting. This seemed to happen a lot in the book. Just a lot of blah, blah, blah that wasn’t adding to the story. This is probably my biggest pet peeve about writing, so it hits me harder than most.
The next star I dropped due to the predictability of the story. When I first started the book, I was walking with my husband and said I think so-and-so did it, if I’m right I’m dropping it a star. Hence… the next star to drop.
I read this in 2 days. Again, it wasn’t a bad book. It was easy to get through. An interesting thriller. I’d recommend this book to most average readers. For readers like me, I would recommend with a warning that you might find yourself wanting more.
