Lessons in Chemistry By: Bonnie Gramus

Lessons in Chemistry will teach you a little bit about chemistry but you’ll spend more time laughing along as Elizabeth Zott overcomes social norms in the 1960s proving a woman can do anything a man tries to do.
My biggest take away is don’t take this book too seriously. If you think this is a book is a fist up for women’s rights. A historically accurate depiction of the 1960s… you will be highly disappointed. This book is a JOKE (in my opinion) and I mean that in the best way.

To start out, I didn’t want to read this book. My book club picked it and so I begrudgingly purchased it. The booked opened with a unique character voice and that was the hook that pulled me in. I loved the voice, the sarcasm and the sass. It kept be entertained and carrie through the entire book.
I really enjoyed this book overall and the few things that did bother me about this book (and themes that always bother me in all books) were out shined by all the good and laughs. This isn’t a review though unless we talk about the positives and the negatives, so here we go.
The man bashing is exhausting. I’m sick of bashing ALL men, generalizing that all men are evil (when you could say the same generalization for any topic) and having 2 great men showcased in the book.
Shoving women rights down the reader’s throats when the reader was smart enough to understand the historical environment the FIRST time it was mentioned.

And then taking all of thee above and making your main character an absolute joke. A ‘thing’ we all can laugh at, which is the whole point of the book (if taken seriously) is women SHOULD BE taken seriously.
So, boil down all these points down to, don’t take this book seriously. We are bringing serious subjects in while poking fun at them. Sprinkling in a little ACTUAL interesting chemistry facts (love learning while being entertained). This all leads to a 5 star book, in my opinion.
