This one wasn’t for me. The amount of relief I feel that I don’t have to read this story anymore is overwhelming. I wish I didn’t finish it, but also glad I did. Conflicting feelings there.
Anyways – the biggest issue for me was right off the bat I couldn’t get in to the story. I didn’t like the characters and I didn’t care about them. So already, I’m doomed.
A side annoyance was COVID was brought up constantly and honestly, it was unnecessary. Sure, an author can bring in COVID into the imaginary world to be relatable… but this was just like having the news slammed in my face. It was preachy. I felt like a child being lectured. All feelings aside, it didn’t add to the story, so I’m not sure why it was there.
This is my first Slaughter novel as she was recommended to me as being an excellent dark/thriller author. I’m all for dark stories .. but again, this felt unnecessarily dark. Too many, too much details.
What it comes down to is I was unable to find one redeeming moment in this book. I don’t have anything positive to say, so I’ll stop the review now. I’ll have to think twice before picking up another Slaughter novel as this one left me with a bad first impression.
